Message from the Founder -> "Welcome! I’m Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad, founder of The Medic Life and a practising UK doctor. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about online medical work experience and our students' participation in a virtual medical workshop via video conferences.
Yes, our own students enrolled in the FREE Medicine Work Experience Programme are gaining medical work experience, which is critical for any aspiring doctor. UK medical schools expect applicants to understand healthcare in action, and they value quality reflections from experience over just logging hours. Yet in-person placements are often hard to arrange – many hospitals limit spots for under-16s, and students without family links in medicine can struggle to get ‘a foot in the door’. An online alternative helps bridge this gap, giving all applicants (from Year 10 students to graduates) a chance to observe healthcare and learn from home."

Online Medical Work Experience: Medicine Online Work Experience - Virtual Work Experience
The Medic Life is a UK-wide, NHS-aligned initiative offering a free online medicine work experience program. We partner with doctors and medical teams across the country to deliver authentic insights. Here’s what our virtual program provides:
What We Offer at the Online Medical Work Experience Programme?
Expert-led Virtual Workshops: Live webinars where NHS doctors, dentists and medical students share a “day in the life” of their specialty. In each session you’ll hear firsthand about careers in surgery, general practice, psychiatry and more. These interactive events are hugely popular (for example, our April 2025 workshop drew 2,000+ sign-ups for just 340 spots), showing students get valuable, high-demand content.
Interactive Clinical Simulations: Guided video case studies and role-plays that mimic real hospital or GP scenarios. We include resources like the Royal College of GPs’ Observe GP platform – a free online series of interactive clips and quizzes set in a GP surgery. These virtual cases let you make decisions and see outcomes, so you can learn practical skills (e.g. taking patient histories, understanding care pathways) even from your laptop.
Guided Reflection & Mentorship: After each activity or case, our experienced mentors teach you how to reflect on what you’ve seen. You’ll complete short reflective exercises and get one-on-one feedback from doctors (including our founder, Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad). This ensures you extract meaningful lessons – for example, how teamwork in a ward or empathy with patients relates to skills you already have – which you can then discuss in your personal statement or interviews. Medical schools look for applicants who can articulate these insights, not just list experiences.
Nationwide & Inclusive Access: Our online format means you can join from anywhere in the UK, regardless of age or location. Students who are too young for clinical placements (Year 10–11) can still attend our webinars and virtual sessions, and we’ll point them to age-appropriate online content. For older students, we also connect willing applicants with local NHS mentors for in-person shadowing when possible. In short, whether you’re in London, Glasgow or anywhere in between, you can benefit.
Completely Free: True to our mission, all parts of the program cost nothing. We follow NHS guidance that students shouldn’t pay for work experience, so we never charge you. Because we offer everything free, demand is high; to accommodate this we run multiple sessions per year and use waiting lists to give as many students as possible a chance. Check our events calendar and sign up early so you don’t miss out.
Students at a free medical work experience workshop (online or in-person). Our sessions fill up fast due to high interest. Ready to get started? We hold several free virtual workshops annually, each open to aspiring medics. Our team announces dates on the website, and you can sign up on our “Free Events” page. Keep an eye on our updates – last year’s workshops sold out in seconds, so make sure to register early.
Online Medical Work Experience: Frequently Asked Questions
Is the online medical work experience completely free?
Yes. The Medic Life’s entire online work experience program is 100% free of charge. We adhere to NHS policy that students should not pay for work experience. Every workshop and virtual session is offered at no cost to participants.
Who can take part in this online work experience?
Anyone in the UK applying to study medicine (or dentistry) can join. Our program is open to all ages – from Year 10 students just starting to explore medical careers, up through A-level students and even graduates – and to any geography in the UK. We provide suitable activities for younger teens (for example, virtual case discussions) and more advanced sessions for older applicants. If you’re an aspiring medic, this is for you.
Will medical schools accept a virtual work experience?
Absolutely. Leading UK medical bodies endorse virtual experience. For instance, the RCGP’s Observe GP platform is supported by the Medical Schools Council, meaning top universities recognize it as a legitimate form of work experience. Many medical schools (and organizations like BSMS) have launched free virtual programs during the COVID era, and they advise using these experiences alongside any in-person placements. The key is to treat them seriously – take notes, complete reflections – because admissions tutors value the insights you gain.
What about other virtual programs, like the BSMS Virtual Work Experience?
There are several free online programs run by universities. Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) offers a Virtual Work Experience course at no cost. This free course covers six different specialties and asks students to do a short reflective write-up. Once you submit the reflections and surveys, BSMS awards you a certificate of completion. Many students combine such university programs with our workshops to broaden their exposure. All these experiences – ours and others like BSMS – can bolster your application if you reflect on them thoughtfully.
How do I sign up for The Medic Life’s online work experience?
