The University of Sheffield Medical School is one of the UK's most respected and student-friendly places to train as a doctor. Named Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Student Experience 2026 and topping the Russell Group in the 2025 National Student Survey for teaching quality, Sheffield combines rigorous medical training with one of the most supportive learning environments in British medical education.

With early patient contact from Year 1, close partnerships with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and a distinctive commitment to widening participation in medicine, Sheffield offers two undergraduate medicine routes: the standard five-year MBChB (A100) and a unique four-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme (A101) exclusively for Widening Participation graduates.

In this guide, Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad, The Medic Life's admissions expert, breaks down every entry requirement for Sheffield Medicine for 2026 entry — A-levels, GCSEs, UCAT, IB, the three-stage selection process, graduate entry, contextual offers, the MMI interview, international requirements and more.

Expert note from Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad: "Sheffield is unique among Russell Group medical schools in one critical respect: it publishes a fixed minimum UCAT score threshold — 1,800 out of 2,700 for 2026 entry — below which no application progresses regardless of academic achievement. This is not a target; it is a hard gate. Once you clear that threshold, you are ranked purely on your UCAT score for interview selection. This makes UCAT preparation not just important at Sheffield, but the single most decisive factor in whether you receive an interview invitation."

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: At a Glance

Here is a quick-reference overview of the key entry requirements for the five-year MBChB Medicine course (UCAS code A100) at the University of Sheffield.

18 places (A100 only; A101 has no international places)

Sheffield Medicine Acceptance Rate & Admissions Statistics

Sheffield publishes admissions data that gives applicants a clear picture of the competition. Here is what the most recent available data tells us.

~2,200

Applications received (2025 data, for ~315 places)

~1,100

Home A100 applicants invited to interview

~100

International applicants invited to interview

~7:1

Approximate applicant-to-place ratio

For 2025 entry, approximately 2,200 applications were received for 315 places across both A100 and A101 combined. The School invites approximately 1,100 home and 100 international applicants for A100 interviews, and 40-60 applicants for A101 interviews.

Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad's perspective: "The approximately 1,100 interview invitations for 273 home places represents a 4:1 interview-to-place ratio — meaning roughly 1 in 4 of those interviewed receive an offer. This is more generous than schools with tighter ratios, but the MMI scoring system is rigorous. A total score of 3 or above in every station and SJT is prioritised in the offer ranking — consistent performance across all stations is as important as excelling in individual ones."

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Sheffield Medicine Selection Process: The Three-Stage System

Sheffield uses a transparent, three-stage selection process. Each stage must be cleared before progressing to the next. Understanding this system is essential to planning a competitive application.

Stage

What It Involves

Stage 1 — Academic Entry Requirements

Applications checked for GCSE and A-level minimums. Must meet all academic thresholds. Applications that do not meet minimums are deemed unsuccessful.

Stage 2 — UCAT Screening and Ranking

Must meet minimum UCAT threshold of 1,800/2,700 (2026 entry). Widening participation fast-track applicants progress if they meet the threshold. All other applications ranked by UCAT score; top scorers invited to interview.

Stage 3 — Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

Eight MMI stations plus UCAT SJT as a virtual 9th station. Total score out of 45. Ranked; applicants scoring 3+ in every station prioritised. Offers made to highest scorers.

Sheffield explicitly states: the UCAS personal statement is not read or scored at any stage of the selection process. This is unique among Russell Group medical schools. At Sheffield, your application succeeds or fails on academics, UCAT score, and interview performance alone.

Sheffield Medicine A-Level Entry Requirements (A100 — 2026 Entry)

Sheffield's A-level requirements are well-defined and must be met precisely. Here is the full detail for both the standard and EPQ alternative routes.

Standard A-Level Offer (AAA)

  • AAA at A-level, including Chemistry or Biology at grade A

  • Plus a second science from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Psychology at grade A

  • All three A-levels must be taken in one sitting

  • A pass in the practical element of any science A-levels taken is required

EPQ Alternative Offer (AAB + A in EPQ)

  • AAB at A-level including Chemistry or Biology (at grade A) and a second science

  • Plus A in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

  • The EPQ and A-levels must be taken in the same sitting to be eligible for this alternative offer

  • The same second science subject requirement applies

Accepted Second Science Subjects

  • Biology (if Chemistry is the first science)

  • Chemistry (if Biology is the first science)

  • Physics

  • Mathematics

  • Psychology

Subjects NOT Accepted

  • Further Mathematics (not counted for A100 purposes)

  • Critical Thinking

  • General Studies

A-Level Resit Policy

Sheffield does not typically accept A-level resits for the standard A100 programme. Exceptions may be considered in cases of significant extenuating circumstances with appropriate supporting documentation submitted via the Disrupted Studies form. Applicants with resit A-levels should contact the medical admissions office before applying.

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Graduate Applicants to A100

  • Graduates wishing to apply to the standard five-year A100 course (rather than the A101 Graduate Entry Medicine course) are welcome to do so. Graduate applicants must:

  • Hold a 2:1 or above in a bachelor's degree

  • Still meet the standard A-level requirements (AAA or AAB + EPQ)

  • Still meet the GCSE requirements

  • Sit UCAT in the year of application

  • Their application is ranked on UCAT in the same way as other A100 applicants

Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad says: "The EPQ alternative offer is a meaningful strategic opportunity. If you are predicted AAB rather than AAA and are completing an EPQ, Sheffield's alternative offer becomes accessible — provided the EPQ grade is A and everything is taken in the same sitting. This is worth planning for in Year 12 if your predicted grades are borderline. Talk to your school about taking an EPQ alongside your A-levels as a deliberate strategy."

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Sheffield Medicine GCSE Requirements (A100)

Sheffield's GCSE requirements are clear, minimum-based standards — GCSEs are not scored or ranked against other applicants. Meeting the threshold is the goal.

  • Minimum 5 GCSEs at grade 7/A or above

  • At least grade 6/B in Mathematics

  • At least grade 6/B in English Language

  • At least grade 6/B in science subjects — Dual Award Science is accepted

  • GCSEs must each have been studied for no longer than two years

  • GCSEs do not all need to be obtained in the same exam sitting or year

GCSE Resit Policy

  • GCSE resits are accepted at Sheffield

  • Resit GCSEs must be taken in one sitting

  • Only one resit per GCSE is permitted

  • Only GCSEs that do not meet the entry requirements need to be retaken — you do not need to resit GCSEs you have already passed at the required grade

  • Non-GCSE qualifications (such as Level 2 OCR qualifications) are not accepted as GCSE equivalents and do not count towards meeting GCSE requirements

Note for applicants who have not studied GCSEs: Email medadmissions@sheffield.ac.uk for information about alternative acceptable qualifications and required levels of achievement. Sheffield will advise on equivalencies case by case.

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Sheffield Medicine IB & Alternative Qualification Requirements

Sheffield accepts a range of qualifications beyond A-levels. Here are the requirements for the most commonly used alternatives for 2026 entry.

Qualification

Sheffield Medicine Requirement (A100)

International Baccalaureate (standard)

36 points overall; Higher Level 6 in Chemistry or Biology + HL 6 in a second science; no less than 4 in all Standard Level subjects

IB (contextual offer)

34 points; HL 6 in Chemistry or Biology; HL 6,5 in two further Higher Level subjects including second science

Scottish Advanced Highers

AABBB + AB — Chemistry or Biology at grade A plus a second science at grade B in Advanced Highers; further study at Highers also required

Access to HE Diploma (Medicine — QAA approved)

Accepted only if applicant has not studied Biology or Chemistry A-levels (or equivalent) or a relevant science degree within the three years prior to starting the Access course; grade requirements published on Sheffield's admissions page

Irish Leaving Certificate, Cambridge Pre-U, European Baccalaureate

Contact medadmissions@sheffield.ac.uk for equivalencies — Sheffield considers a wide range of international qualifications

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Sheffield UCAT Requirements & Cut-Off Score

The UCAT is the most critical single component of a Sheffield Medicine application — more so than at many other UK medical schools. Sheffield uses a published minimum threshold and then ranks all eligible applicants purely by UCAT score to determine interview invitations.

Sheffield UCAT Key Facts for 2026 Entry

  • All applicants to A100 and A101 must sit UCAT in the year of application

  • Minimum UCAT threshold: 1,800/2,700 for 2026 entry

  • This threshold is calculated as the approximate 40th centile score attained by everyone who sat the UCAT for 2023, 2024 and 2025 entry combined

  • Applications scoring below 1,800 do not progress — regardless of academic grades or any other factor

  • Applications scoring 1,800 or above are then ranked by UCAT score; the highest-scoring applicants are invited to interview

  • The UCAT SJT (Situational Judgement Test) is NOT used for shortlisting — it is only used at the interview stage

What Is the Sheffield UCAT Cut-Off Score for 2026/27 Entry?

For 2026 entry, the minimum UCAT threshold is 1,800 out of 2,700. This is a hard threshold published in advance by Sheffield — one of the few UK medical schools to do so. It represents approximately the 40th percentile of all UCAT test-takers.

However, meeting 1,800 is the start of the competition, not the end. All eligible applicants above this threshold are ranked, and only those with the highest scores are invited to interview. Based on previous cycles, the effective competitive score required to receive an interview invitation has been considerably higher than the minimum threshold:

Entry Year

Published UCAT Threshold / Competitive Score Context

2026 entry

Published minimum threshold: 1,800/2,700 (approx. 40th centile)

2025 entry

2,760/3,600 reported competitive threshold (old scoring system with Abstract Reasoning)

Note on scoring change

The UCAT removed Abstract Reasoning for tests taken from 2025 onwards (for 2026 entry). Scores are now out of 2,700 rather than 3,600. Historical comparisons require care — 1,800/2,700 is a minimum gate, not a competitive target.

Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad's UCAT strategy for Sheffield: "Every single point above 1,800 improves your ranking relative to other applicants. With approximately 2,200 applicants competing for approximately 1,100 home interview slots, only roughly the top half of UCAT-eligible applicants receive an interview. A score around 2,000–2,100 is typically more competitive; 2,200+ puts you in a strong position. Critically, do not neglect SJT preparation — while SJT is not used for shortlisting, it contributes up to 5 points to your total interview score of 45. Band 1 in SJT is worth 5 additional points; Band 4 is worth only 2. This could easily be the difference between an offer and a reserve list position."

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Sheffield Medicine MMI Interview Process (2026 Entry)

Sheffield's interview is a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) for home applicants and an online panel interview for international applicants. The MMI is a pivotal stage — all offers are determined by final interview rank combined with the UCAT SJT score.

Feature

Detail

Format (home applicants)

In-person Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) in Sheffield

Format (international applicants)

Online panel interview

Number of Stations (MMI)

8 assessed stations

SJT Integration

UCAT SJT band converted to a score out of 5, added as a virtual 9th station

Total Interview Score

8 stations × 5 points each = 40 points; + SJT up to 5 points = 45 total

Prioritisation Rule

Applicants scoring 3 or above in every MMI station AND the SJT are prioritised in the offer ranking

Personal Statement

Interviewers have NOT read your personal statement — but questions on topics you typically write about may be asked

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: UCAT SJT Score Integration — How It Works

The UCAT SJT band you achieved when sitting the test is converted into an MMI score and added to your eight-station total. Here is the conversion table:

UCAT SJT Band

MMI Score Awarded (out of 5)

Band 1

5 points

Band 2

4 points

Band 3

3 points

Band 4

2 points

With a maximum of 5 points from SJT and 40 from the 8 MMI stations, your SJT band can meaningfully shift your final ranking. An applicant with SJT Band 1 (5 pts) has a 3-point advantage over an applicant with SJT Band 4 (2 pts) — equivalent to the difference of scoring one full point higher across three separate interview stations.

Sheffield Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) — Entry Requirements

The Sheffield MBChB Graduate Entry Medicine programme (UCAS code A101) is a four-year accelerated route into medicine for life science graduates from Widening Participation backgrounds. This is not a general graduate entry route — eligibility requires both a qualifying degree and meeting the WP criteria.

A101 — What Makes It Unique

  • Only 24 home places available; NO international places

  • Exclusively for applicants who meet Widening Participation criteria — not available to graduates who do not meet WP requirements

  • Applicants bypass Year 1 of the standard A100 course, beginning with a six-week recap of Phase 1 topics before entering Phase 2

  • Academic ranking is NOT used for A101 shortlisting — all eligible applicants are ranked by UCAT score only

  • GCSEs and AS-levels are not considered for A101

  • Personal statements are not read or scored for A101

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: A101 Academic Requirements

  • A minimum of BBB at A-level, including Chemistry or Biology

  • A 2:1 or above in a life sciences degree with significant biological content (66% overall; 65% for Biology degrees)

  • UCAT taken in the year of application; minimum threshold 1,800/2,700 (same as A100)

  • Further Mathematics, Critical Thinking and General Studies are not accepted for A101 A-levels

  • A-level resits are accepted for A101 — any and all resits must be in the same sitting; one resit per A-level permitted; only A-levels not meeting requirements need to be retaken

  • Predicted degree classifications are accepted

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: A101 IB Requirement

32 points overall with 5 in three Higher Level subjects including Chemistry or Biology + 2:1 life sciences degree + WP criteria

A101 Widening Participation Criteria

  • Applicants must meet two or more of the following criteria at the time they completed their secondary education (prior to entering higher education). For 2026 entry applicants:

  • Living in a neighbourhood in IMD (Indices of Multiple Deprivation) quintile 1 or 2 at the time of completing A-levels — postcode checker available on Sheffield's website

  • Living in a neighbourhood with a low rate of participation in higher education

  • In care or a care leaver (at any stage of life up to age 18, including adoption from care)

  • Estranged from both parents or legal guardians during secondary education

  • First in family to enter higher education — neither parent/guardian attended university

  • Parents in unskilled or unemployed occupations

  • Having a disability

  • Receiving free school meals in years 10-13

  • Receiving a 16-19 Bursary or similar grant

  • Being a young carer with significant caring responsibilities for a family member

  • Refugee or asylum seeker status

Important: A101 applicants must submit a widening participation form by 31 October 2025 — this is a separate deadline from the UCAS application deadline of 15 October 2025. Applications that do not include this form cannot be considered for A101. Sheffield verifies all WP claims.

Dr. Bakhtar Ahmad's A101 advice: "Sheffield's Graduate Entry Medicine programme is one of the most genuinely purpose-built widening participation routes in UK medical education. If you are a life sciences graduate who meets the WP criteria, this course offers a focused, accelerated path to becoming a doctor. The critical insight: because academic rank is not used in A101 shortlisting — only UCAT above the 1,800 threshold — a candidate with BBB and a strong UCAT has an equal shot as one with AAA. If you are eligible, maximise your UCAT, not your academic re-sits."

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Sheffield Medicine Widening Access — Contextual Offers (A100)

Sheffield is strongly committed to widening participation in medicine and offers contextual access routes for the standard A100 course as well as A101. There are two main fast-track routes for A100 applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.

1. Access to Sheffield (Medicine) Programme

  • A two-year structured programme offering activities that benefit applicants' reflective development and application preparation

  • Participants fast-track directly to interview if they meet the minimum UCAT threshold of 1,800 — their UCAT score is NOT ranked against other applicants

  • Contextual A-level offer: up to two grades below the standard requirement

  • GCSE requirement for programme participants: minimum 5 GCSEs at grades 9-6/A*-B with grade 4/C or above in Science (Double Award accepted), Mathematics and English Language

  • Contact Sheffield's widening access team or medadmissions@sheffield.ac.uk for programme eligibility and enrolment

2. University of Bradford / Sheffield Hallam University Pathway

  • Students on recognised pathways at the University of Bradford or Sheffield Hallam University are eligible for fast-track to interview if they meet the minimum UCAT threshold

  • Must also meet two or more of the A101 WP criteria

  • UCAT is still required and must meet the 1,800 threshold

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Access Sheffield and Access+ Contextual Offers

  • Applicants eligible for Access Sheffield or Access+ support receive a contextual offer (typically one to two grades below standard) but still have their UCAT ranked in the standard process

  • Only participants in the Access to Sheffield (Medicine) programme — not the general Access Sheffield scheme — receive the fast-track UCAT benefit

  • Participants in the Realising Opportunities programme (national scheme, up to Cohort 16) are also eligible for a contextual offer for up to two years after completing the programme

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: International Students

International students are welcome to apply to the five-year A100 MBChB programme. The A101 Graduate Entry Medicine course has no international places.

  • 18 international places available per year on A100

  • Same academic requirements apply: AAA A-levels (or equivalent), GCSE minimums, UCAT minimum 1,800

  • International applicants are invited to an online panel interview (not in-person MMI) — dates 8, 9, 12 and 13 January 2026

  • Approximately 100 international applicants are invited to interview per year

  • IELTS: 7.5 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in each component; or GCSE English Language at grade 6/B; or alternative acceptable English language qualification

  • International applicants are ranked on UCAT in the same way as home applicants for interview selection

Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements: Work Experience for Sheffield Medicine

Sheffield does not specify a required type or volume of work experience for the A100 course. The admissions process does not formally score work experience — it is not part of the Stage 1 (academic) or Stage 2 (UCAT) selection.

However, work experience matters for two reasons at Sheffield:

  • It is discussed at the MMI — interviewers do not have your personal statement, but may ask questions about your healthcare experiences, motivations, and reflections

  • Understanding what a career in medicine involves is implicitly assessed across multiple MMI stations through your responses about healthcare, patient care, and professional values

  • Sheffield advises that applicants should be able to demonstrate an understanding of medicine and what being a doctor entails. Volunteering in a care-related role, health-related work, and speaking to healthcare professionals are all valuable. Virtual or online work experience is also recognised.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sheffield Medicine Entry Requirements

Q: What grades do you need to get into Sheffield Medical School?

A: For the standard A100 MBChB, Sheffield requires AAA at A-level including Chemistry or Biology at grade A and a second science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology). Alternatively, AAB + A in the EPQ is accepted if taken in the same sitting. 5 GCSEs at grade 7/A are required with at least grade 6/B in Maths, English Language and science subjects. For Graduate Entry Medicine (A101), BBB at A-level including Chemistry or Biology, plus a 2:1 in a life sciences degree and meeting Widening Participation criteria.

Q: What UCAT score is needed for Sheffield Medicine?

A: For 2026 entry, Sheffield has published a minimum UCAT threshold of 1,800 out of 2,700. Applications scoring below this threshold do not progress. Above the threshold, all applications are ranked by UCAT score and only those with the highest scores are invited to interview. The 2025 entry competitive threshold was 2,760 under the old 3,600 scoring system (which included Abstract Reasoning). The UCAT SJT is not used for shortlisting but is converted to a score (out of 5) that contributes to your total MMI score of 45.

Q: Can I get into Sheffield Medicine with A*A*B?

A: If your A*A*B includes Chemistry or Biology at A (or A*) and a second science, this meets Sheffield's minimum academic threshold (A*A*B contains the AAB required for the EPQ route if you also hold an A in the EPQ, or technically exceeds AAA across the three subjects depending on configuration). In practice, A*A*B with the correct subject combination meets Sheffield's academic entry requirement. However, meeting academic requirements does not guarantee an interview — you still need to meet the UCAT minimum threshold of 1,800 and score highly enough to be ranked into the interview pool.

Q: What is the UCAT cut-off for Sheffield Graduate Entry Medicine?

A: The same minimum UCAT threshold applies to A101 Graduate Entry Medicine as to A100: 1,800/2,700 for 2026 entry. Above this threshold, A101 applicants are ranked solely by their UCAT score for interview selection — unlike A100 where academic grades also form part of the screening. Academic attainment is not used to rank A101 applicants above the minimum threshold. The A101 programme has 24 home places and no international places, and is exclusively for Widening Participation graduates.

Q: What are the Sheffield medicine GCSE requirements?

A: Sheffield requires 5 GCSEs at grade 7/A or above, with at least grade 6/B in Mathematics, English Language and science subjects (Dual Award Science is accepted). GCSEs must have been studied for no longer than two years each. GCSE resits are permitted — one resit per GCSE, taken in one sitting, with only GCSEs not meeting requirements needing to be retaken. Non-GCSE Level 2 qualifications are not accepted as equivalents. Applicants who have not studied GCSEs should contact medadmissions@sheffield.ac.uk.

Q: What are Sheffield medicine's requirements for undergraduate applicants?

A: Undergraduate (school leaver) applicants to A100 need: AAA at A-level in one sitting including Chemistry or Biology (A) and a second science; or AAB + A in EPQ (same sitting). 5 GCSEs at grade 7/A with 6/B in Maths, English Language and sciences. UCAT minimum 1,800/2,700 (2026 entry). Applications ranked by UCAT; highest scorers invited to in-person MMI. Personal statement not read or scored. No specific work experience requirement. Sheffield does not typically accept A-level resits for A100 without significant extenuating circumstances.

Q: What are Sheffield medicine entry requirements for 2026?

A: For 2026 entry, the A100 requirements are: AAA at A-level (or AAB + EPQ) including Chemistry or Biology and a second science; 5 GCSEs at grade 7/A with 6/B in Maths, English and sciences; UCAT minimum 1,800/2,700. A100 places: 273 home + 18 international. A101 Graduate Entry Medicine: BBB A-levels + 2:1 life sciences degree + WP criteria; UCAT minimum 1,800. A101 places: 24 home only. Key dates: UCAS deadline 15 October 2025; A101 WP form 31 October 2025; MMI interviews 19 January – 6 February 2026.

Q: What is Sheffield's interview to offer ratio for medicine?

A: Sheffield invites approximately 1,100 home applicants and 100 international applicants to interview for A100 annually. With 273 home and 18 international places, this represents approximately a 4:1 interview-to-place ratio for home applicants — meaning roughly 1 in 4 interviewed applicants receive an offer. This is relatively generous compared to some medical schools. Applicants who score 3 or above in every MMI station and the SJT virtual station are prioritised in the offer ranking.

Q: What are Sheffield medicine postgraduate entry requirements?

A: Sheffield does not offer a standalone postgraduate medicine degree for general applicants. The A101 Graduate Entry Medicine programme is the closest route for graduates — but it is exclusively for applicants from Widening Participation backgrounds. Graduates who do not meet WP criteria can apply to the standard five-year A100 course, requiring AAA A-levels, GCSE minimums, and a 2:1 degree. For postgraduate (Masters/PhD) medical research degrees, visit Sheffield's School of Medicine and Population Health postgraduate page.
