Kent and Medway Medicine Interview -> What to Expect: KMMS Interview Format & Timing

Kent & Medway Medical School (KMMS) uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format, featuring both individual stations and a group task/station.

Kent and Medway Medicine Interview -> Some key points:

The first interviews for 2026 entry are scheduled for December 2025 on the Canterbury campus for home applicants, and in January 2026 for international applicants.

Interview invites are sent via KentVision and UCAS.

Previously, KMMS used six ~7-minute stations plus a ~42-minute group station (with short “downtime” intervals) for the full interview day.

The group station is significant: applicants discuss or plan with peers, and each candidate is scored individually.

The total interview duration (briefing + stations + debrief) can span ~3 hours.

KMMS themselves confirm that interviews are mandatory and that applicants must complete them to be considered for admission.

They also emphasise the values and attributes they seek in candidates: resilience, compassion, communication, teamwork, respect, responsibility, and alignment with NHS core values.

KMMS uses a “Contextualise Everyone” scheme: academic attainment is assessed relative to school background, and contextual offers are possible (e.g. ABB or BBB) for partner-school students.

Kent and Medway Medicine Interview -> Selection & Shortlisting: UCAT, Academic & Context

Before the interview stage, KMMS filters applications using academic performance, UCAT, and contextual factors.

Applicants must take the UCAT in the same year of application.

KMMS applies a UCAT threshold (which varies annually). For instance, in a recent cycle a threshold of 2490+ was used.

Applicants with UCAT SJT Band 4 are typically not considered.

Academic performance is contextualised: raw grades are adjusted relative to the applicant’s school/region to reduce disadvantage.

In 2022, KMMS interviewed ~404 out of ~1,463 applicants (~27.6 %) and made ~207 offers (≈52 % of interviewees)

In 2020, ~1,537 applied, ~284 interviewed (18.5 %) → ~184 offers (12.0 %)

In past cycles, average UCAT scores among those interviewed were ~2623 for home students.

These stats illustrate how competitive the process is and how much weight the interview stage carries.

Kent and Medway Medicine Interview -> KMMS Interview Themes, Sample Questions & What Interviewers Look For?

KMMS uses a mixture of station types. Based on public sources, here are expected themes, sample prompts, and evaluator expectations:

Theme

Sample Prompts / Scenarios

What Interviewers Look For

Values & Professionalism

“Tell us a time you took responsibility when things weren’t going well.”  “If you saw a peer making inappropriate comments, what would you do?”

Integrity, accountability, respect, ethical awareness

Situational Judgement / Ethics

“You’re asked by an FY1 to use their login to speed up access to patient records. What do you do?”  “A friend asks you to share confidential OSCE materials. How do you respond?”

Understanding of confidentiality, honesty, decision making under pressure

Communication & Role-play

Scenario: upset patient demands explanation of treatment delay  Scenario: explain vaccine side effects to hesitant parent

Clarity, empathy, checking understanding, listening

Problem / Analytical Reasoning

“DNAs are increasing — propose two interventions given limited budget.”  “ED failing sepsis targets — what data do you need and what steps would you take?”

Critical thinking, asking clarifying questions, modelling plausible solutions

Data Handling / Numeracy

“Compare Test A vs Test B in low prevalence: which is better?”  “Calculate absolute risk reduction and NNT from given data.”

Comfort with numbers, interpreting statistics, explaining in plain language

Task / Practical

“Teach the interviewer to assemble an object from a diagram.”

Clear instruction, chunking, checking understanding

Group Task (40-minute discussion)

“Design an initiative to improve medication adherence in a deprived area.”  “Prioritise proposals to improve GP access in local area.”

Collaboration, listening, leadership, decision justification

For example, previous KMMS interviews included 6 × 7-minute stations plus a 42-minute group round.

Applicants often report that the group station is a test of team dynamics rather than purely content - you should aim to contribute balanced ideas, ensure others are heard, summarise points, and avoid dominating.

One applicant that we tutored noted:

“They ask you not to revise because they want an authentic response … don’t be robotic and memorise answers”

Another described:

“Group task … balance between being active but not dominating … show you include others.”

Kent and Medway Medicine Interview -> How You’ll Be Marked & Evaluation

  • Each station (and the group task) is individually assessed - no one part should overly dominate the final decision.

  • Scores are given for content (reasoning, examples, logic) and communication (clarity, empathy, structure).

  • Reflection, adaptability, and the ability to reconsider your stance (with justification) are valued.

  • The group station is judged for teamwork: your ability to listen, contribute, mediate, summarise, and drive consensus without bulldozing.

Because KMMS publishes an NDA policy, exact past questions are not shared publicly, further emphasising that authenticity and process matter more than rehearsed scripts.

Kent and Medway Medicine Interview -> Strategy & Tactical Advice

Embrace authenticity — KMMS explicitly discourages over-preparation that leads to “scripted” responses.

Practice group task dynamics — rotate roles (facilitator, summariser, timekeeper), invite quieter members in, summarise periodically, and build consensus.

Master the 4 medical ethics pillars + 3Cs (Capacity, Consent, Confidentiality) — many scenarios revolve around applying these frameworks.

Be numeracy confident — practice interpreting charts, calculating risk, NNT, sensitivity/specificity etc.

Simulate strict timing — stations often last ~7 minutes; practice delivering structured answers within that constraint.

Use reflective structure — opening (what you will cover), main points, and short reflection or caveat at the end.

Read NHS and local health issues — especially challenges faced in Kent & Medway (e.g. rural access, health inequalities).

Prepare for MMI role-play — rehearse scenarios with friends/family, emphasising clarity, empathy, and managing conflict.
