Cardiff University School of Dentistry is the only dental school in Wales - and one of the most respected in the UK, consistently ranked in the country's top 5 for the subject. Its five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS, UCAS code A200) is taught alongside the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff, one of the largest dental hospitals in the UK, giving students exceptional early clinical exposure.

Cardiff is also one of the most rules-based, transparent dental schools in the country when it comes to admissions — and that's good news if you understand how the system works. This guide, written by Dr Bakhtar Ahmad, practising dentist and Dentistry Admissions Lead at The Medic Life, explains exactly how Cardiff scores applicants and what you need to win an interview, verified against Cardiff's official admissions information for 2026 entry.

"Cardiff is the school where preparation pays off most predictably. They don't use predicted grades, they don't score your personal statement for ranking, and from the 2026 cycle they score your achieved GCSEs out of 28 points — then use the UCAT purely as a cut-off when there are more top-scorers than interview slots. If you understand that, you can plan your Cardiff application with real precision." — Dr Bakhtar Ahmad, Dentistry Admissions Lead, The Medic Life

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: Cardiff Uni Dentistry at a Glance — 2026 Entry

  • Course: Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), 5 years

  • UCAS code: A200 | Institution code: C15

  • Provider: Cardiff University School of Dentistry

  • Clinical base: University Dental Hospital, Cardiff + South Wales community sites

  • Places: ~74 per year (significant Welsh-domiciled allocation)

  • Standard A-level offer: AAA including Biology and Chemistry

  • Admissions test: UCAT (used as a cut-off, not added to academic score for 2026)

  • Interview: Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

  • 2026 MMI dates: 12 – 23 January 2026

  • Predicted grades / AS levels: Not used at any stage

  • Resits: A-level resits not accepted; achieved GCSE resits accepted

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: Cardiff Uni Dentistry A-Level Requirements

Cardiff's standard A-level offer for the BDS is:

  • AAA, including grade A in both Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry

  • All grades must be achieved in a single sitting

  • A-level resits are NOT accepted — you must hit AAA first time

  • Not accepted as subjects: Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies (or similar)

  • Predicted A-levels are not used — Cardiff scores achieved qualifications only

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: A crucial Cardiff quirk

Because Cardiff doesn't use predicted grades, achieved A-levels score a maximum of just 1 point in their system — the heavy lifting is done by your GCSEs. This is the opposite of most dental schools, and it changes your whole strategy.

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "At most schools, your A-level predictions open the door. At Cardiff, they barely move the needle for ranking — your achieved GCSE profile does. That means if your GCSEs are exceptional, Cardiff is a fantastic strategic choice. If they're patchy, you need to know that before you 'waste' a UCAS slot."

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: Cardiff Uni Dentistry GCSE Requirements

GCSEs are the heart of Cardiff's selection. The minimum requirements are:

  • English Language or Welsh Language at grade B/6 (or equivalent)

Six other GCSEs, including:

  • Biology and Chemistry as separate subjects at AA/77, OR

  • Double Award Science at AA/77

  • Achieved GCSE resits are accepted at the point of application

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: The Cardiff 28-point GCSE scoring system

This is the single most important thing to understand about Cardiff Dentistry for 2026 entry:

  • Cardiff scores your top 7 GCSEs (including the mandatory subjects)

  • Each grade A*/8/9 scores 4 points, with lower grades scoring fewer points

  • The maximum academic GCSE score is 28 points (7 subjects × 4 points)

  • For 2026 entry, Cardiff no longer adds UCAT or SJT points to this academic score — the academic score is GCSE-based, out of 28

  • Once you reach 28 points, you're treated as having the maximum academic score and considered alongside all other top-scorers

  • In practice, this means you realistically need close to 28/28 to be competitive — in 2024, 216 candidates scored the full 28 points.

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "For 2026, Cardiff effectively rewards near-perfect GCSEs. If you scored, say, 24/28, you're at a real disadvantage before the UCAT is even considered. Don't let this discourage you — it just means we'd build your UCAS list so Cardiff sits alongside schools that weight things differently, giving you the best overall chance."

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: How Cardiff Selects Dentistry Applicants for Interview

Cardiff's process is refreshingly structured. Here's how it works for the BDS (A200):

  • Minimum eligibility check: You must meet the minimum Level 2 (GCSE) and Level 3 (A-level) requirements, including the required subjects, plus English language and a sat UCAT.

  • Academic scoring: Eligible applicants with acceptable personal statements and references are scored on achieved qualifications only — primarily the 28-point GCSE score (achieved A-levels add a maximum of 1 point).

  • UCAT as a cut-off: If more applicants achieve a high academic score than there are interview places in a given applicant group, the UCAT score is used to decide who gets through. The SJT could then be used as a further tiebreak (it was not needed for 2025 entry).

  • Applicant groupings: Candidates are considered within their group, with additional consideration for contextual applicants, Welsh-domiciled applicants, and those completing a widening participation programme.

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "Cardiff's UCAT is a gatekeeper, not a points-booster. It only comes into play when there are too many max-academic applicants for the interview slots — but in a competitive year, that's exactly what happens. So you still need a strong UCAT. Think of GCSEs as your entry ticket and UCAT as the queue-jump when the room is full."

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: UCAT Requirements for Cardiff Uni Dentistry

  • The UCAT is required and must be sat before you submit your UCAS application

  • There is no fixed, pre-published UCAT cut-off — the threshold changes every cycle and can differ between applicant groups (e.g. Welsh vs rest-of-UK)

  • For 2026 entry, UCAT is used only as a cut-off when high-academic applicants outnumber interview places — it is not added to your academic score

  • The SJT band may be used as a secondary tiebreaker if needed

  • Because the threshold is set by cohort strength, aim for the highest score you can — a strong UCAT is your insurance when the academic field is crowded

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: The Cardiff Uni Dentistry Interview (MMI)

If you make the cut, you'll be invited to Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) — several short, themed stations, each assessing a different attribute.

2026 MMI dates

  • BDS Dental Surgery (A200): 12 – 23 January 2026

What the MMI assesses

  • Motivation for, and realistic understanding of, dentistry

  • Communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ethics and professionalism

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking

  • Suitability for the Profession — including courtesy and conduct towards patients, colleagues and staff

Important: how offers are decided after interview

  • Offers are based on your interview score

  • Cardiff also scores "Suitability for the Profession" — it is possible to score well on stations but not receive an offer if your suitability scores are low

  • If two applicants have the same interview score, UCAT is used to prioritise offers

  • Reserve lists are ranked on the same criteria

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "Cardiff's 'Suitability for the Profession' scoring catches people out. You can be sharp and articulate but still miss out if you come across as arrogant or dismissive at any station — including with the staff who greet you. Treat everyone, all day, as part of the interview. Our mock MMIs train exactly this kind of professional presence."

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: Cardiff Uni Dentistry Work Experience

Work experience is strongly encouraged but not strictly mandatory at Cardiff. Ideally you'll have:

  • Experience or shadowing in a dental environment (general practice, hospital or community dentistry), or

  • Experience in a clinical or care setting that demonstrates your understanding of patient care

  • As always, reflection matters more than hours — Cardiff (like all dental schools) wants to see what you learned about the realities of a dental career.

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: The New UCAS Personal Statement (2026 Entry)

From 2026 entry, the UCAS personal statement is structured into three separate prompts (no longer one continuous essay):

  • Your reasons for wanting to study dentistry

  • How you've prepared for the course (academic + experience)

  • Your key skills and experiences that make you suitable

Each prompt has a 1,000-character limit (≈175 words), for 4,000 characters total. While Cardiff doesn't score the personal statement for ranking, it must be acceptable for you to be scored academically — and it's used to differentiate borderline candidates.

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you'll need:

  • IELTS 7.0 overall, with at least 7.0 in Speaking and 6.5 in all other subskills, OR

  • GCSE English Language (or Welsh) at grade B/6 or an accepted equivalent

  • Student visa applicants must meet UKVI requirements

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: Health, DBS and Enrolment Conditions

Before you can enrol on the Cardiff BDS, you must satisfy:

  • Occupational Health check, including blood-borne virus screening

  • Hepatitis B immunisation if non-immune (plus other required immunisations)

  • Enhanced DBS / criminal records check

  • Compliance with General Dental Council (GDC) fitness-to-practise standards

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: Cardiff University Dental Hygiene and Therapy Entry Requirements

If the BDS isn't the right fit, Cardiff also offers:

  • BSc Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene (B752)

  • DipHE Dental Hygiene

These have different, lower academic thresholds (a maximum academic score of 20 points rather than 28), and the UCAT is not currently required. A Dental Nurse qualification is accepted in lieu of one A-level (excluding Biology) for these programmes. Other Level 3 qualifications may be considered. Always check the Cardiff School of Dentistry pages for the latest BSc/DipHE requirements.

Cardiff Uni Dentistry Entry Requirements: FAQs

Does Cardiff Uni offer dentistry?

Yes. Cardiff University is the only dental school in Wales and offers a five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS, UCAS code A200), taught in partnership with the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff. Cardiff also offers a BSc in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene (B752) and a DipHE in Dental Hygiene. The School of Dentistry, founded in 1883, is consistently ranked among the UK's top 5 dental schools.

What is the acceptance rate for Cardiff University dentistry?

Cardiff Dentistry is highly competitive. In a recent cycle (2023 entry), Cardiff received around 979 applications and made roughly 97 offers for about 74 places — an offer rate of approximately 10%. Cardiff interviews around 250–300 home applicants each year. Because places are limited and a significant proportion are allocated to Welsh-domiciled students under government targets, the effective competition for rest-of-UK applicants is even tighter. A near-maximum GCSE score (close to 28/28) and a strong UCAT are essential to be competitive.

What are the entry requirements for dentistry?

While requirements vary across the 16 UK dental schools, the common threads are:

  • A-Levels: Usually AAA, including Chemistry and Biology (Cardiff requires AAA with A in both Biology and Chemistry, one sitting)

  • GCSEs: Strong grades — Cardiff requires AA/77 in Biology and Chemistry and scores your top 7 GCSEs out of 28 points

  • Admissions test: UCAT at most schools, including Cardiff

  • Interview: MMI (Multiple Mini Interviews) at Cardiff

  • Work experience: Dental or care-setting experience, with genuine reflection

  • English language, health clearance and an Enhanced DBS before enrolment

The key is that every dental school weights these differently — Cardiff is unusually GCSE-driven and ignores predicted grades, whereas others lean heavily on UCAT or A-level predictions. Dr Bakhtar Ahmad helps applicants map their profile against each school's exact scoring system.

Which UK university is best for dentistry?

There's no single "best" dental school — the right choice depends on your academic profile, UCAT score, location preferences and how each school selects. That said, Cardiff is regularly ranked in the UK top 5 for Dentistry (Complete University Guide), praised for its supportive environment and outstanding clinical facilities at one of the UK's largest dental hospitals.

Other consistently high-ranking UK dental schools include Glasgow, Dundee, Queen Mary (Barts), Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and King's College London. Rather than chasing rankings, the smartest approach is to build a strategic four-school UCAS list matched to your strengths - exactly what The Medic Life helps applicants do.
