The University of Liverpool School of Dentistry is one of the UK's most respected Russell Group dental schools, offering a five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS, UCAS code A200) delivered at the Liverpool Dental Hospital alongside the main Brownlow Hill campus. Liverpool produces highly skilled, clinically confident dentists through a programme built around active learning, early patient contact, and authentic assessment.

With approximately 70 places per year (up to 4 for international students) and an exceptionally transparent, multi-stage selection process, Liverpool rewards applicants who understand its system — because Liverpool's admissions process has one feature almost no other dental school shares: the Non-Academic Information Questionnaire (NAQ). Understanding this, and preparing for it properly, is the difference between reaching the MMI interview and being filtered out.

This page, written by Dr Bakhtar Ahmad, Dentistry Admissions Lead at The Medic Life, is your complete, verified guide to Liverpool Dentistry entry requirements for 2026 entry.

"Liverpool is one of the most strategically interesting dental schools in the UK. The academic check is binary — you either meet it or you don't, and no amount of extra GCSEs helps you at that stage. After that, it's UCAT, SJT band, and the Non-Academic Questionnaire that do the ranking. That questionnaire carries 60% of the stage two score — more than the UCAT itself. Most applicants don't realise this until it's too late to prepare properly." — Dr Bakhtar Ahmad, Dentistry Admissions Lead, The Medic Life

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Liverpool Dentistry A-Level Requirements

Liverpool's standard offer is:

  • AAA in 3 A-levels, taken together at one sitting after 2 years of study

  • Biology and Chemistry are essential

  • The third subject may be from the Arts or Sciences — no restriction

  • Not accepted: General Studies, Critical Thinking, Vocational/Applied A-levels

  • AS level grades are not considered at any stage

  • For Science A-levels with separately graded practical endorsements, a Pass is required

  • The no-resit rule — one of Liverpool's strictest

Liverpool has an unambiguous policy on resits:

  • A-level resits are not accepted

  • Applicants who have retaken either Year 12 or Year 13 will not be considered

  • This applies regardless of the reason for the retake (except for formal extenuating circumstances — see below)

  • Extenuating circumstances for resit applicants: applicants who achieved less than BBB at their first sitting are unlikely to be considered even with accepted extenuating circumstances

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "Liverpool's no-resit rule is one of the strictest in the country. If you've retaken Year 12 or Year 13 for any reason, you need to know about this before you use a UCAS choice on Liverpool. It's one of the first questions I ask applicants about during our strategy sessions — getting it wrong costs you a valuable application slot."

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Liverpool Dentistry GCSE Requirements

  • Liverpool has one of the most demanding GCSE profiles of any UK dental school:

  • A minimum of 8 GCSEs

  • Must include at least 5 subjects at Grade A/7 and 3 subjects at Grade B/6

Must include Grade B/6 or above in:

  • English Language

  • Mathematics (not GCSE Maths Numeracy — this is explicitly excluded)

  • Science — if Dual Science has not been taken, Biology GCSE is required

Important GCSE rules

  • Vocational/Applied GCSEs (BTECs, Cambridge Nationals, etc.) are NOT accepted

  • GCSE Maths Numeracy is NOT accepted

  • Two short courses may be counted in lieu of one full GCSE — but applicants must distinguish between full and short courses on the UCAS form

  • All GCSE requirements must be in place at the time of application — pending grades at GCSE level will not be considered

  • GCSE resits ARE accepted, provided the result is in place at the time of application

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "The 8-GCSE minimum with 5 at grade 7 is among the highest GCSE bars of any UK dental school. At many schools, a strong UCAT can compensate for a thinner GCSE profile. At Liverpool, the GCSE check is stage one — you either clear it or you don't. If your GCSE profile has gaps, Liverpool needs to come off the shortlist early."

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Liverpool Dentistry Alternative Qualifications

International Baccalaureate (IB)

  • 36 points overall, including at least 6 in Higher Level Chemistry and Biology

Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers

  • AAAAB at Higher Level and AA at Advanced Higher Level, including Chemistry and Biology

Access to Higher Education Diploma

Liverpool accepts Access Courses but with strict conditions — it is an adult learner route only:

  • Applicants should normally have been out of education for at least 5 years

  • NOT appropriate for students who have failed to achieve the necessary A-level grades in the last 5 years

  • The Access Course should have a minimum of 12 units of Biology AND 12 units of Chemistry content at Level 3

  • Candidates must achieve Distinction in 45 credits at Level 3 and at least 80% overall

  • The Access Course must be completed in one year

  • Students must begin the BDS course within 2 years of completing the Access programme

  • Only the first full Access qualification awarded is considered

  • Online or distance learning Access courses are not accepted

  • Further information will be requested at the time of application — not all Access Courses meet the required criteria. Contact dentenq@liverpool.ac.uk before applying

  • GCSE requirements: at least 5 subjects at Grade B/6, including Maths, English Language and Science (Biology if no Dual Science)

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Liverpool Dentistry Graduate Route

Graduates can apply for the 5-year BDS A200 with:

  • A degree in any subject at a minimum of 2:1 classification (only the first full degree is considered; Foundation degrees not accepted)

  • For non-classified degrees (e.g. MBChB): a minimum overall grade of 70% or above

  • Plus a minimum of 3 A-levels at ABB or above including Chemistry and Biology (third subject Arts or Sciences; General Studies/Critical Thinking/Vocational not accepted)

  • Plus a minimum of 7 GCSEs at Grade B/6 or above, including Maths, English Language and a Science (Biology if no Dual Science)

Additional graduate-route rules:

  • Applications from individuals enrolled on another university degree course will not be considered unless that course is completed

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: UCAT Requirements for Liverpool Dentistry

The UCAT is a mandatory part of the Liverpool BDS application and must be sat in the year of application.

The rules

  • Required — no exceptions; must be sat in the same application cycle

  • No set UCAT cut-off score — UCAT is considered in conjunction with the Non-Academic Information Questionnaire

  • SJT Band 4 is explicitly excluded — Liverpool states this would not be a competitive enough score for the BDS programme. This is one of only a small number of dental schools to explicitly exclude Band 4 at SJT.

  • The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) band is scored separately and combined with the UCAT cognitive total as part of the Stage 2 ranking

How Liverpool weights the UCAT

Liverpool's published score weighting at Stage 2 is:

  • UCAT total + SJT band: 40%

  • Non-Academic Information Questionnaire: 60%

  • This means the NAQ outweighs the UCAT in the shortlisting score. A strong UCAT alone is not sufficient if the NAQ is weak.

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "The SJT Band 4 exclusion at Liverpool catches people who skip SJT preparation on the assumption that most schools don't use it. Liverpool uses it explicitly, and Band 4 is a hard stop. Aim for Band 1 or Band 2. And because the NAQ accounts for 60% of Stage 2, your UCAT is really only worth about a 40% share of that ranking. Preparing for both at the same level of intensity is the right approach."

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: How Liverpool Selects Dentistry Applicants

Liverpool's selection process is unusually transparent — three distinct stages, each with published criteria:

Stage 1 — Academic eligibility check

  • Are predicted/achieved A-level grades (AAA including Biology and Chemistry) met or predicted?

  • Is the minimum GCSE profile in place (8 GCSEs, 5 at A/7, 3 at B/6, including English, Maths and Science)?

  • Liverpool does NOT rank applicants on grades at this stage and does NOT use a points-based system

  • It is a binary pass/fail: meet the minimum = proceed to Stage 2

Stage 2 — UCAT + Non-Academic Information Questionnaire combined score

  • Applicants who pass Stage 1 receive the Non-Academic Information Questionnaire by email between 1 October and 15 November 2025. They have 2 weeks to return it.

  • Failure to submit by the deadline = automatic rejection (application deemed incomplete, regardless of the reason the email was missed — Liverpool advises checking junk mail)

Stage 2 combined score: UCAT/SJT 40% + NAQ 60%

  • The top-scoring applicants from Stage 2 are invited to interview

Stage 3 — MMI interview

  • Offers are based solely on interview performance — grades and UCAT scores are not re-used

  • All applicants notified of decisions by end of March

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: The Non-Academic Information Questionnaire (NAQ) — Liverpool's Defining Feature

The NAQ is what makes Liverpool genuinely different from every other UK dental school. Functionally, it is an expanded, structured personal statement sent separately after your UCAS application clears the academic check.

What the NAQ covers

  • Work experience and shadowing in dentistry or healthcare settings

  • Motivation and commitment to a career in dentistry

  • Caring attitude and awareness of NHS values

  • Insight into the dental profession and the realities of a dental career

How to approach it

  • You can use your UCAS personal statement as the starting point — the NAQ is a more structured version of the same themes

  • Address each section fully — it is not a place for vague generalities

  • Liverpool explicitly states: reflect on what you observed and what you learned, not just what you did

Don't miss it

Liverpool is unambiguous: if you do not return the questionnaire by the given deadline, your application will be rejected. Even if the email went to your junk folder, Liverpool cannot proceed. Check your junk inbox from October onwards.

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Liverpool Dentistry Foundation Year (Year 0)

Liverpool offers a genuinely distinctive widening-access route into the BDS for those who don't have traditional A-levels:

  • Foundation to Human and Animal Health Professions (Dentistry) — Year 0

  • A 1-year Year 0 programme studied at Carmel College, St Helens (approximately 9 miles from the main Liverpool campus)

  • On successful completion, students progress directly to Year 1 of the BDS A200 programme — making the total qualification pathway 6 years

  • Developed by Liverpool in partnership with local Further Education providers

Who is the Foundation Year for?

  • Mature students and non-traditional students who have typically been out of formal education for some time

  • Those who do not have A-Level qualifications or have taken non-traditional qualifications

  • Home students only

Who is NOT eligible

  • School-leavers and A-Level students are not eligible — they should apply to the standard 5-year BDS A200 instead

  • Applicants currently studying Access Diplomas are not considered

  • Liverpool will not consider applications from prospective students making multiple UCAS applications across a variety of programmes, as this does not demonstrate clear commitment

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Foundation Year GCSE requirements

  • Minimum 5 GCSEs at Grade B/6 or above, including Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry (or Dual Combined Science)

  • No UCAT required

  • The Foundation Year does not require the UCAT — assessment is based on GCSEs, personal statement and interview performance.

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Liverpool Dentistry Contextual Admissions

The University of Liverpool operates a contextual admissions system designed to recognise barriers to educational progression:

  • Contextual offers may be available for applicants who have experienced barriers to educational progression

  • Use Liverpool's Contextual Admissions Indicator Tool on the university website to check eligibility

  • If you are eligible, no separate action is needed — all relevant information is gathered from your UCAS form

  • Contextual consideration does not waive the minimum academic thresholds

Liverpool Dentistry Entry Requirements: Important Liverpool Dentistry Application Rules

Several policies at Liverpool are strict enough that every applicant needs to know them:

  • Plagiarism: The University is notified by UCAS of any plagiarised personal statements. The Dental School automatically rejects such applications. You may reapply in a future cycle with an original statement.

  • Academic endeavour: There should be evidence of academic engagement within the last 5 years.

  • Extenuating circumstances: Must be submitted directly to dentenq@liverpool.ac.uk (not in the UCAS reference section) with supporting documentation by 15 October 2025 for circumstances occurring up to that date. Circumstances between 16 October 2025 and 30 June 2026 may be submitted by 1 July 2026.

  • UCAS form completeness: All qualifications must be entered, including any failed — failure to complete the form fully results in rejection.

  • Only one Liverpool programme: You cannot apply to the BDS A200 and also hold a concurrent enrolment on another university degree course unless that degree is complete and results known by 13 August 2026.
