The University of Leeds School of Dentistry is one of the UK's most respected dental schools — top 10 in the UK in both the Complete University Guide 2026 and the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026. Based in the Worsley Building and Leeds Dental Institute at the heart of campus, Leeds offers something genuinely unique: it is the only dental school in the UK to award a joint Master and Bachelor degree — graduates receive both the BChD (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) and MChD (Master of Dental Surgery) on successful completion of the five-year programme.

With approximately 70–75 places per year and a holistic selection process that combines academic performance, UCAT, and an online MMI interview, Leeds is highly competitive. But it rewards applicants who understand its specific rules — including some that are quite different from other schools.

This guide, written by Dr Bakhtar Ahmad, Dentistry Admissions Lead at The Medic Life, is your complete, verified reference for Leeds Dentistry entry requirements for 2026 entry.

"Leeds has a quirk that trips up a lot of applicants: the final offer is made entirely on MMI performance — not on grades or UCAT. That means once you're in that interview, everything else has already done its job. But first you need to clear the academic and UCAT shortlist. And Leeds has a strict, binary personal statement rule — if it isn't relevant to dentistry, you're rejected without consideration. No second chances." — Dr Bakhtar Ahmad, Dentistry Admissions Lead, The Medic Life

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Leeds Dentistry A-Level Requirements

The standard Leeds Dental Surgery A-level offer is:

  • AAA, including Biology and Chemistry

  • General Studies and Critical Thinking are excluded — they cannot count as the third A-level

  • You must achieve a Pass in the practical element of any science A-levels

  • Predicted grades must be included in your UCAS application — applications submitted without predicted grades from your current school or learning provider will not be considered

  • All Level 2 qualifications (GCSEs) must be achieved before applying — pending GCSE results will not be considered

  • One resit accepted — with strict conditions

Leeds accepts a maximum of one resit attempt. However:

  • Evidence of all resit predicted and achieved grades must be provided in your UCAS application

  • Applications without this evidence will not be considered

  • A second resit (completing A-levels over 4+ years) effectively rules out an application

Access to Leeds contextual offer

  • For eligible applicants under the Access to Leeds widening-participation scheme:

  • ABB — with Chemistry and Biology both taken, and an A in either Chemistry or Biology

  • Eligibility is based on low-income household background, being first in your immediate family to apply to higher education, having had studies disrupted, or living in a postcode with low higher-education participation

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "The one-resit rule at Leeds is genuinely more accommodating than many dental schools — Glasgow and Dundee, for example, take a much harder line. But the predicted grades rule is non-negotiable: if your UCAS form doesn't include your school's predicted grades at the time of submission, Leeds won't look at it. Get your school to confirm predicted grades are on the form before you click submit."

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Leeds Dentistry GCSE Requirements

This is one of the most searched topics for Leeds Dentistry — and the requirements are clear but strict:

  • A minimum of 6 GCSEs at Grade 6/B or higher

  • Must include all of the following at Grade 6/B or above:

  • Chemistry (or Dual Award Science at the equivalent grade)

  • Biology (or Dual Award Science at the equivalent grade)

  • English

  • Maths

Two important GCSE rules

  • All Level 2 qualifications (GCSEs) must be achieved before applying. Pending GCSE results will not be considered — you cannot apply with GCSEs that are yet to be sat or graded.

  • GCSEs are used to shortlist for interview, combined with A-level/predicted grades and the UCAT score. However, once you reach the interview stage, Leeds has confirmed that GCSEs are not looked at after shortlisting — only your MMI performance decides the offer.

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "Leeds is genuinely GCSE-heavy in its shortlisting. I've seen students with a strong UCAT but a weaker GCSE profile struggle to make the interview cut at Leeds, while similar students sailed through at schools with less GCSE weighting. This isn't a school where you can carry an average GCSE set — six at 6/B minimum is the floor, not the target."

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Leeds Dentistry Alternative Qualifications

Leeds accepts a wide range of qualifications mapped to AAA:

International Baccalaureate (IB)

  • 35 points overall

  • Must include 6 in HL Chemistry and HL Biology and HL 6 in one other subject

  • Plus 3 Standard Level subjects at grade 5 or above

  • English and Maths at SL grade 5 if not offered at GCSE

  • Maths Studies is acceptable

  • Visa applicants must have English at SL 5 and HL 4, or provide an alternative English language qualification at time of application

Scottish Qualifications

  • Leeds accepts three alternative Scottish routes:

  • AA at Advanced Higher in Biology and Chemistry plus AABBB at Highers

  • A in one Advanced Higher in Biology or Chemistry plus AAABB at Highers with A in the other science

  • AAAAAA at Highers including Biology and Chemistry

  • National Level supporting requirements: 6 subjects at Grade B including English, Maths and Dual Science (or Biology and Chemistry separately)

Irish Leaving Certificate

  • AAAAAA (or H2H2H2H2H2H2 equivalent) at Higher Level

  • Must include Biology, Chemistry, English and Maths

  • Irish Junior Certificate not accepted

BTEC (Applied Science)

  • Leeds accepts BTECs for the BChD — which is unusual among dental schools:

  • BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science: D*DD, OR

  • BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science: D*D plus A Level Chemistry at grade A

  • Standard GCSE requirements (6 at 6/B including Bio, Chem, English, Maths) still apply

  • BTEC in Health and Social Care is NOT accepted

European Baccalaureate

  • 80% overall, with minimum grade 8 in Biology and Chemistry

Access to Higher Education Diploma

  • 60 credits from an Access to HE Diploma in Biomedical/Medical/Health Science or Science

  • 45 graded Level 3 credits at Distinction, including:

  • At least 15 credits at Distinction from Chemistry units

  • At least 15 credits at Distinction from Biology units

  • Must still meet minimum GCSE requirements

Leeds will NOT accept Access to HE Diploma applications from people who:

  • Achieved below a 2:1 in a previous degree (without substantial subsequent healthcare or demanding professional experience)

  • Commenced an Access Diploma within less than 3 years of completing A-levels, other qualifications, or a degree

  • Studied the Access Diploma through distance learning

  • If applying with Access to HE Diploma, contact the admissions team to confirm your qualifications are suitable before applying

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: UCAT Requirements for Leeds Dentistry

Leeds introduced the UCAT from 2024 entry onwards, replacing the discontinued BMAT.

The rules

  • UCAT is compulsory for all Dental Surgery BChD applicants from 2024 entry onwards

  • Must be taken in the year of application — previous years' scores are not accepted

  • Leeds does not accept BMAT or GAMSAT in place of UCAT

  • Results are obtained directly from UCAT — do not submit scores separately to Leeds

  • The School of Dentistry does not currently impose a cut-off UCAT score

How Leeds uses the UCAT

Leeds uses a holistic combined ranking approach:

  • Academic criteria (achieved and predicted grades, GCSEs) are considered alongside the UCAT score

  • These are combined into a total score to rank applicants for interview shortlisting

  • A stronger academic profile can compensate for a slightly lower UCAT — and vice versa

  • The SJT (Situational Judgement Test) band is also considered as part of the shortlisting score at Leeds (confirmed by open-day reports and applicant data)

  • The previous year's published UCAT cut-off was 2500 on the old 3600-point scale — equivalent to approximately 1850 on the new 2700-point scale (from 2025 onwards after Abstract Reasoning was removed)

Important note: Leeds published the 2025 entry cut-off retrospectively. The cut-off shifts annually with cohort strength, and the new 2700-point scale makes direct comparison to older cut-offs misleading. Always aim higher than the minimum.

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "Leeds switching from BMAT to UCAT in 2024 is still settling in — the pool of applicants and the cut-off will shift as more students prepare for the test. This is genuinely the third cycle of Leeds using UCAT for 2026 entry. Strong preparation matters, and the SJT counts here, so don't skip it. We build UCAT plans specifically around Leeds' combined scoring method."

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: How Leeds Selects Dentistry Applicants

Leeds uses a clear, staged process:

Stage 1 — Minimum eligibility check

  • All applicants must have achieved Level 2 qualifications (GCSEs), with a minimum of 6 at Grade 6/B including Biology/Chemistry, English and Maths

  • Predicted grades must be included from the current school/learning provider

  • Personal statement must be relevant to Dentistry — if it isn't, the application is rejected without further consideration

Stage 2 — Academic + UCAT combined score ranking

  • Achieved and predicted A-level grades combined with UCAT score (including SJT) to create a total ranking score

  • GCSE profile is part of this score

Stage 3 — MMI interview shortlisting

  • The highest-ranking applicants are invited to an online Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

  • Leeds cannot facilitate interviews outside the scheduled interview period (typically February)

Stage 4 — Offer decision

  • The offer decision is based entirely on MMI performance — achieved academic performance, predicted grades and UCAT score play no role once you are at interview

  • Leeds operates a waitlist for applicants who narrowly missed an offer

  • Leeds does not normally enter Clearing for BChD

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Leeds Dentistry Graduate Entry

Leeds welcomes graduate applicants to the standard 5-year BChD (there is no separate accelerated graduate programme — all graduates join the same cohort):

  • A 2:1 or higher in a relevant science or healthcare subject

  • Plus GCSE Maths at Grade 4/C minimum

  • UCAT required (same cycle of application)

  • Predicted grades from your degree programme must be included on the UCAS form

What is a "relevant" subject?

  • Relevant subjects include Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Dentistry-related Allied Health, Human Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and related healthcare disciplines. If your subject isn't clearly listed, contact the Leeds admissions team before applying (denadmissions@leeds.ac.uk).

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Leeds Dentistry Foundation Year

Leeds does not have a dedicated "Gateway to Dentistry" widening-access pathway of the kind offered at Bristol. However, for students whose academic profile doesn't currently meet the standard BChD requirements, Leeds offers access via:

  • University of Leeds BSc Interdisciplinary Science with Foundation Year

  • Applied for directly via UCAS

  • A fully integrated University of Leeds Foundation Year leading into a BSc

  • If you subsequently achieve the required standard, this can support progression towards dental school

Alternative Entry Scheme for mature applicants

  • For mature applicants without the standard A-level profile who don't have required A-levels

  • Eligible applicants are asked to write an essay as part of the process

  • Contact the Lifelong Learning Centre (lifelonglearning@leeds.ac.uk) for eligibility criteria and details

Dr Bakhtar's tip: "If someone is searching for a 'Gateway to Dentistry' or a dedicated Foundation Year route at Leeds, it's important to be clear: Leeds doesn't run a widening-access dental pathway in the same format as Bristol's 6-year BDS. The Foundation Year BSc route is a preparatory sciences degree with its own trajectory. Students who want a direct widening-access dental route should look at Bristol's BDS Gateway to Dentistry as an alternative."

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Leeds Dentistry Personal Statement Rules

Leeds has one of the strictest personal statement policies in UK dentistry:

  • The personal statement must be relevant to Dentistry

  • If it is not relevant to Dentistry, your application will be rejected without further consideration — no second chances

  • Leeds does not accept additional documents submitted separately — everything they need must be in the UCAS application

  • This means a shared personal statement covering medicine and dentistry will not be treated favourably — your statement should be specifically focused on dentistry

  • Leeds School of Dentistry publishes its own personal statement guide on the Faculty of Medicine and Health website — read it before writing your statement.

  • One programme only

  • Leeds also requires candidates to apply to only one programme within the School of Dentistry. If your personal statement demonstrates motivation for another non-dental vocational course (e.g. nursing or medicine), your application will be rejected without further consideration.

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: English Language Requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English:

IELTS 7.0 overall, with:

  • Minimum 7.5 in Listening and Speaking

  • Minimum 6.0 in Writing and Reading

  • Results must not be more than 2 years old at the course start date

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: Health, DBS and Occupational Health Requirements

Before beginning the course, all successful applicants must:

  • Complete a confidential Occupational Health assessment (health questionnaire and, if needed, further consultation)

  • Undertake screening for serious communicable diseases: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV and tuberculosis (TB)

  • Provide proof of Hepatitis B immunisation (or begin the immunisation schedule at the School)

  • Pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check — the DBS covers UK criminal records; additional checks ("Certificate of Good Conduct") may be required for overseas periods

Leeds Dentistry Entry Requirements: FAQs

What GCSE do you need for Leeds University dentistry?

For the Dental Surgery BChD (A200) at the University of Leeds, you need:

  • A minimum of 6 GCSEs at Grade 6/B or higher

  • Must include, all at Grade 6/B or above:

  • Chemistry (or Dual Award Science)

  • Biology (or Dual Award Science)

  • English

  • Mathematics

There are two critical rules: all GCSEs must be achieved before you apply (pending grades are not accepted), and the 6/B minimum is a floor, not a competitive target — GCSEs form part of Leeds' holistic ranking for interview shortlisting alongside predicted grades and UCAT score. Students with a cluster of 8s and 9s across the GCSE profile will rank more competitively than those who just clear the bar.

After shortlisting, GCSEs are not looked at again — only your MMI performance determines whether you receive an offer.
